-Kaohsiung Medical University –
To broaden students’ global perspectives and cultivate internationally competitive talent, Kaohsiung Medical University (KMU) has been actively promoting a variety of scholarship programs. Over the past three years, more than 550 students have benefited, with total funding exceeding NT$15 million. These scholarships support students in studying and conducting research around the world, enhancing both academic development and cross-cultural adaptability.
KMU collaborates with prestigious academic institutions across five continents to build international exchange platforms that integrate multicultural and professional learning. Each college at KMU selects partner institutions aligned with its academic strengths, offering students diverse opportunities for exchange programs and joint courses. The university also assists students in applying for the Ministry of Education's "Trainee Program for Overseas Internships and Studies" to pursue internships or research abroad.
For instance, the College of Health Sciences offers students internship opportunities at the University of Cologne in Germany and Waseda University in Japan, enabling them to broaden their horizons and achieve professional goals. The School of Pharmacy partners with the University of Southern California (USA) and the Tokyo University of Pharmacy and Life Sciences (Japan), allowing students to experience cross-border research and pharmaceutical practice. The College of Medicine provides clinical training opportunities at top institutions such as Johns Hopkins Hospital in the U.S. and Juntendo University Hospital, the leading private medical school in Japan, helping students strengthen clinical skills and professional competencies.
In addition, students participating in the "MOE Study Abroad Program" have had the chance to study at world-renowned universities such as the University of Glasgow (UK) and the University of Queensland (Australia), furthering their professional knowledge and expanding their cultural understanding.
To encourage greater student participation in international exchange, KMU has established scholarships such as the “International Study & Service Grant” and the “Thousand-Mile Horse Project.” The former supports students attending international conferences and internships—medical and post-baccalaureate medical students have received clinical training at Harvard University, for example. The latter offers funding of up to NT$600,000 for short- or long-term research at overseas institutions. Chen, a student from the School of Dentistry who recently completed an internship at the University of Pennsylvania, remarked that the overseas experience enabled her to focus more deeply on personal growth and professional development. Lin, a post-baccalaureate medical student who attended a conference in Austria and presented a poster, said the visit gave him insight into cutting-edge trends and developments in pharmaceutical research. The university also offers additional financial aid for students facing economic or cultural disadvantages, helping them overcome barriers and pursue their dreams of studying abroad.
Additionally, the KMU North America Alumni Association provides diverse scholarships and encourages students to engage in public service. Each year, they select passionate and skilled students to participate in international medical missions. These hands-on experiences allow students to put their aspirations into action, while honing their professional skills and expanding their global awareness. The goal is to nurture a new generation of professionals who possess both international perspectives and a strong sense of social responsibility.
KMU firmly believes that through comprehensive scholarship systems and a wide range of international exchange programs, students can not only achieve academic excellence but also continue personal growth at every stage of life. They are not just learners on the global stage—but changemakers in a globalized world, creating limitless possibilities for their future.
