To welcome the Lunar New Year and create a festive and heartwarming atmosphere, Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital Gangshan Hospital held a special event titled “Welcoming Spring with Calligraphy • Handwritten Blessings • Charity Together” this morning (26th) in the hospital’s first-floor lobby. The event featured live calligraphy by invited masters, a charity sale of Spring Festival couplets, DIY red envelope and couplet activities, and the reuse of eco-friendly secondhand planters. The diverse program attracted many patients, family members, and visitors, allowing them to experience the rich festive spirit and warmth of the New Year within the hospital.
The venue was filled with the fragrance of ink as calligraphy masters wrote auspicious Spring Festival couplets upon request. Many participants chose phrases such as “peace,” “health,” and “well-being,” hoping to usher in good fortune for the coming year. A portion of the proceeds from the charity sale will be donated to the hospital’s Ren-Ai Fund, transforming New Year blessings into tangible support and care for patients and disadvantaged groups.
Notably, the event also served as an important demonstration of the hospital’s commitment to ESG principles. Vice Superintendent Li Ching-chia explained that many staff members are interested in gardening and campus greening initiatives. As a result, the hospital officially established the “Green Thumb Gardening Club,” which regularly invites professional horticulture instructors to provide plant care guidance and related knowledge, while organizing plant exchange activities to promote environmental sustainability and green living concepts.
Guided by the core principle of “no resource waste,” the club prioritizes the use of secondhand pots and recycled materials. By refurbishing and repurposing old planters, members create revitalized green spaces that allow plants to flourish again within the hospital. Patient ward balconies have gradually been transformed into therapeutic green spaces, offering inpatients, accompanying family members, and hospital staff a relaxing environment to unwind—adding warmth and healing energy to the medical setting.
At the conclusion of the event, Fo Guang Shan generously prepared Laba porridge to share with attendees, providing comfort and warmth during the winter season. Patients and their families visiting the hospital were able to enjoy a taste of home-like warmth. The limited servings quickly drew long lines, creating a touching and heartwarming scene.
The hospital stated that beyond its responsibility for medical care, it remains committed to integrating public welfare, environmental sustainability, and humanistic care into its initiatives. By putting ESG principles into practice and strengthening community connections through diverse programs such as the gardening club, the hospital continues to cultivate a friendly healthcare environment that combines professional excellence with compassionate care.
