In observance of Arbor Day and in response to the 2050 Net-Zero Emissions policy, Kaohsiung Municipal Siaogang Hospital (KMUH-Siaogang) launched the "ESG: Cultivating the Field of Merit" initiative today (March 12). By establishing a sustainable demonstration vegetable garden, the hospital has created a closed-loop system: food waste generated daily is processed into organic fertilizer via advanced technology, and the resulting harvest is incorporated into hospital meals by the Nutrition Department. This initiative establishes a pioneering model for sustainable operations within medical institutions.

Dr. Chih-Hsing Hung, Superintendent of Siaogang Hospital, stated: "Arbor Day is a vital environmental milestone. Our goal is to integrate greening into daily life. We are moving beyond traditional tree planting to fulfill our corporate social responsibility by forging a path that combines the 'circular economy' with the 'protection of life.'"

Waste management has become a core challenge for sustainable hospital operations. Traditional medical facilities often generate significant waste, leading to environmental burdens and high disposal costs. Siaogang Hospital has successfully turned organic waste—previously seen as a "liability"—into a valuable "asset," directly responding to national waste reduction policies.

The hospital has installed specialized equipment to transform daily food waste into high-quality organic fertilizer, with the technology expected to achieve a waste reduction rate of 10% to 33%. This cross-departmental collaboration—involving General Affairs, Human Resources, Nutrition, Occupational Safety, and Social Services—utilizes the 9th-floor garden to grow vegetables. The harvest is then used by the Nutrition Department for "green meeting meals" or distributed by the Social Services Office to support community care, completing a full circular economy cycle.

This initiative showcases Siaogang Hospital’s achievements in embedding sustainability into community engagement and daily operations. From waste reduction to resource regeneration, the hospital is actualizing the vision of "Green Healthcare." Through this "Table-to-Table" sustainable model, Siaogang Hospital not only strengthens its operational resilience but also sets a definitive national benchmark for ESG transparent governance in the medical secto
