As global climate action enters a critical phase, Kaohsiung Municipal Siaogang Hospital (KMUH-Siaogang) hosted the "2026 First KMU System Sustainability Annual Meeting: Sustaining Together, Acting for Earth" today, April 22, on World Earth Day. This event signifies the medical system's alignment with global environmental issues and its firm commitment to Earth’s sustainable development through concrete action.
Chen Yung-ren, COO of TAISE, remarked in his opening speech that 2026 represents a critical turning point for sustainability in Taiwan. With the implementation of carbon fees, the financialization of sustainability reports, and international human rights compliance, sustainability has evolved into a "value-creating" competitive edge. He emphasized that enterprises must integrate climate risks into their financial cores and seek new opportunities through cross-sector collaboration.
The Executive Yuan and the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) are currently spearheading net-zero emission policies for medical institutions. By integrating sustainability indicators into hospital accreditation and focusing on the dual tracks of "Digital Transformation" and "Energy Saving," the government aims to build a resilient, eco-friendly healthcare system that adapts to climate change, fulfilling the "Healthy Taiwan" national vision.
Chen Chien-chih, Chairman of the Board of Kaohsiung Medical University (KMU), stated that celebrating KMU's 70-year legacy by hosting the inaugural Sustainability Annual Meeting on World Earth Day symbolizes a shift. KMU is no longer limited to traditional medical management; it aims to protect future generations through digital transformation and institutional reform, building a climate-resilient healthcare blueprint for Southern Taiwan.
Lin Chih-lung, Vice President of KMU, noted that the university’s commitment to social responsibility was recently recognized with two awards at the 2026 Global Views USR Awards. From the indigenous community in Namasia to the "Long-term Care Island" of Cijin, KMU has successfully embedded medical resilience into local communities. Today’s annual meeting featured over 100 research posters and strictly adhered to green standards by eliminating single-use items.
Under the leadership of Dr. Chih-Hsing Hung, Superintendent of Siaogang Hospital, the institution has demonstrated formidable ESG results centered on "Sustainability, Intelligence, and Friendliness."
- Energy Transition: The new hospital building achieved the Gold-Level Green Building Label and won the 2025 City Engineering Quality Gold Award for its 200-panel high-efficiency solar array.
- Operational Excellence: The "Green Diet Revolution" reduced food waste to 2%, earning recognition as a 2026 Outstanding Green Procurement Unit by the Ministry of Environment.
- Low-Carbon Initiatives: Collaboration with iPASS for low-carbon commuting has reduced carbon emissions by over 11,000 kg annually.
These achievements earned the hospital two major awards at the 2025 Global Views ESG Medical Sustainability Awards, as well as the Asia-Pacific & Taiwan Sustainability Action Awards (APSAA/TSAA) and the THSA Health Sustainability Report Silver Award, setting a definitive benchmark for green transformation in the medical industry.
