A 40-year-old man surnamed Lo, employed as a crane operator for a shipping and loading company in Kaohsiung, has long worked under high physical demands at the harbor. Unfortunately, following a strenuous overnight shift, he missed a step while descending the crane ladder and fell, injuring his left ankle. He was rushed to the Emergency Department at Kaohsiung Municipal Siaogang Hospital, where X-rays confirmed a closed fracture of the left fibular shaft with associated ankle ligament sprain. He underwent surgery and was admitted for further observation.
This case marks the 2,000th occupational injury case handled by Siaogang Hospital—an important milestone underscoring the hospital’s dedication, under the leadership of Superintendent Dr. Hong Chih-Hsing, to its dual-certified role as a Designated Hospital for Occupational Injury Treatment and Functional Rehabilitation. Upholding its mission of providing “no missed cases, and timely care,” the hospital’s Occupational Medicine Team stepped in during hospitalization to offer integrated support in diagnosis, medical care, rehabilitation, and labor insurance applications—allowing the injured worker to focus on recovery with peace of mind.
Since 2022, Siaogang Hospital has promoted the “One-Stop Occupational Injury Care and Rehabilitation Program”, emphasizing seamless integration from acute medical intervention to long-term functional recovery. A comprehensive care model has been established—spanning emergency care, hospitalization, surgery, functional rehabilitation, and return-to-work planning. With cross-disciplinary collaboration and a patient-centered approach, the hospital provides a “from the accident site back to the workplace” continuum of care. The model not only supports workers in returning to work but also assists companies in reducing occupational risks and workforce attrition.
Furthermore, Siaogang Hospital actively collaborates with the Kaohsiung City Labor Bureau, Occupational Injury Prevention Centers, and the Bureau of Labor Insurance to promote occupational safety awareness, labor health promotion, and workplace health consultation services. Regular professional training sessions are also conducted to strengthen the hospital’s expertise in occupational health.
Superintendent Dr. Hong Chih-Hsing stated, “Behind every injured worker is a family waiting for their safe return. Our duty is to ensure that care arrives not only promptly—but also warmly.” He further emphasized that occupational injury care should go beyond treatment—it must be a systematic safeguard rooted in compassion and responsibility.
Looking ahead, Kaohsiung Municipal Siaogang Hospital will continue to strengthen its capabilities in occupational injury care, ensuring that workers in high-risk industries receive professional and empathetic support the moment an accident occurs—so that every worker’s health, dignity, and value are fully recognized.
