Kaohsiung Municipal Siaogang Hospital (KMSH) has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to medical excellence. Since 2014, KMSH has competed in the National Healthcare Quality Award (NHQA) for 12 consecutive years, accumulating nearly 90 quality honors. This year, KMSH stood out among fierce competitors to secure the highest honor—the "Excellent Institution Award" (Non-Medical Center Category)—marking its second win since 2022.
Dr. Hung Chih-hsing, Superintendent of KMSH, expressed that this glory belongs to the entire staff: "Quality is not just about data; it is our promise to patients’ lives. By fostering a 'Patient-Centered' culture and utilizing Team Resource Management (TRM) with advanced high-fidelity simulations, we ensure every patient receives the best possible care."
To address workforce challenges and strengthen organizational resilience, KMSH has actively promoted smart healthcare. This year, the hospital successfully achieved the "Smart Hospital All-Institution Certification," covering six major service areas: Outpatient, Inpatient, Surgery, Emergency, Laboratory & Imaging, and Pharmacy.
Following the spirit of ISQua international accreditation, KMSH focuses on three core pillars: Sustainability, Digitalization, and Healthcare Support. This certification is a critical milestone in aligning with international standards and realizing a sustainable medical vision.
The award highlights several forward-looking clinical improvement projects:
- Medical Equality in Radiology: The Department of Medical Imaging established a smart triage system to shorten wait times. It also pioneered a "Multi-language Friendly Examination Environment," utilizing multilingual broadcasts and LINE@ platforms to serve over 30,000 international patients annually.
- Optimized Care for the Disabled: Addressing the challenge where nearly 50% of disabled patients faced wait times exceeding 3 hours for accessible transport, KMSH integrated smart scheduling. This reduced overall hospital visit time by nearly 50%, significantly easing the anxiety of patients and their families.
- Occupational Health Revolution: Leveraging digital tools for South Kaohsiung’s industrial zone, the Occupational Injury Integrated Care Platform shortened the average return-to-work time from 194.3 days to 50.4 days—a 74% improvement that protects workers' rights while reducing medical staff workload.
- A Life Without Nasogastric Tubes: The Deglutition and Swallowing Function Reconstruction Center developed an AI-powered tongue pressure detector. This one-stop integrated service from hospital to home has become a benchmark for sustainable care in an aging society, creating high Social Return on Investment (SROI).
KMSH will continue to uphold the principles of smart and sustainable management, actively promoting Green Healthcare while prioritizing patient safety. Together with the Joint Commission of Taiwan (JCT), we strive toward a vision of a "Sustainable, Smart, and Friendly" hospital for all.
